Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1971. He attended the University of Pretoria for a short time before moving to Canada at the age of 17 to attend Queen's University. He transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he received dual bachelor's degrees in physics and economics. He then pursued a PhD in energy physics at Stanford University, but left the program after two days to pursue a business career.

In 1995, Musk co-founded web software company Zip2 with his brother, which provided online business directories and maps to newspapers. The company was sold to Compaq for nearly $300 million in 1999. Musk then founded X.com, an online payment company, which later became PayPal and was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.



After the sale of PayPal, Musk turned his attention to space exploration and founded SpaceX in 2002 with the goal of reducing the cost of space travel and eventually colonizing Mars. In 2008, SpaceX became the first privately-funded company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station. In 2012, the company's Dragon spacecraft became the first privately-funded spacecraft to successfully dock with the space station.

In addition to SpaceX, Musk has also been involved in the development of electric vehicles. In 2004, he joined the board of directors of Tesla, Inc., an electric vehicle company, and later became its CEO. Under Musk's leadership, Tesla has become one of the leading manufacturers of electric vehicles and energy storage systems.



Musk has also been involved in several other ventures, including the development of the Hyperloop, a high-speed transportation system; the Boring Company, which aims to reduce traffic congestion through the construction of underground transportation tunnels; and SolarCity, a solar energy services company.

Musk has been recognized for his work in the fields of technology and sustainability. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Heinlein Prize for Advances in Space Commercialization and the Royal Aeronautical Society's Gold Medal.

Despite his many successes, Musk's business practices and personal life have also been the subject of much controversy and criticism. His management style and erratic behavior have led to multiple turnover of key personnel at his companies, and he has been involved in various legal disputes.

Overall, Elon Musk is known for his ambitious goals to reduce global warming and help make humanity a multi-planetary species through his companies, and his innovation and leadership in the field of technology and sustainable energy.
